GENETICS/NATURE

I don't understand nature

It's something alien to me

But I know the moon is there

And I think that I should care

If it fell out of its hole and altered me

How many more tides will they spring

Before they understand

How many more times/tides will it sting

Before I understand

Do I need to understand

No I guess I don't need to understand

It maybe ok

If I could swim to the sky

Should I swim to the sky?

I don't understand genetics

It's something alien to me

But I know my genes are there

And I think that I should care

If one fell out of place and altered me

How many mutants will they spring

Before they understand

How many more times will it sting

Before I understand

Will I ever understand

No I guess I will never understand

It may be OK

But there again pigs might fly

Yeah your pigs might fly

I don't understand statistics

It's something alien to me

But I know the chance is there

And I think that I should care

If one day it turned out to be me

How many statisticians does it take

To fuck the land

How many more times will it sting

My arse before I understand

Do I need to understand

No I guess I don't need to understand

So prediction passed the buck

And the field is slipping away

Yeah the field slipping away

I don't understand suspicion - huh

It's something alien to me

But it doesn't seem quite right

That Monsanto and its might

Should sow the seeds of slavery for me

How many time bombs tick away

In an innocent pocket full of rice

How many time bombs gnawed away

At midnight by a silly group of mice

Prediction so precise,

Progression has its price

Oh me oh my,

Yeah I've seen a carrot fly

I've seen a carrot fly

I don't understand extinction no

It's something alien to me

But I've seen the threat destroyed

Yeah your politics deployed

You're flogging nature

When it should be free

How many nooses will you swing

Before you understand

How many more times will it sting

Before we understand

Will we ever understand

No I guess I we’ll never understand

I'm dreading the day

When they cut up all the passers by

Mix us up and watch us all die.

Yeah I'm dreading that day

When they cut up all the passers by

Yeah mix us up and watch us all die

I don't understand nature no

It's something alien to me

But I know the moon is there

And I think that I should care

If it fell out of its hole and altered me

The GM crop debate continues. What if genetically modified crops went wrong? What if it all goes according to plan?  The song starts with a poetic suggestion of ignorance. The ensuing simplistic analysis raises some concerns and highlights some important potential flaws. The debate focused on the immediate impact on western agriculture, economy, profits and health. What if Ncuga Erotywo saves seeds to plant next year and they don’t germinate? What if roundup won’t kill the weeds growing between the cracks in your patio. Did those seeds spill from the bird table and why didn’t the birds eat those? Did the roundup kill the herb beneficial to the chaffinch in keeping that papillomavirus under control?

Sometimes the song is called Nature

Sometimes it is called Genetics

All mixed up and both the same.
